Guo Meimei, an alleged Red Cross employee from China who is famous for her opulent lifestyle, has been convicted of running a casino. She was sentenced to five years in prison and a 50,000 renminbi fine ($7,800 US).
Twenty-four-year-old Guo's trial finished within seven hours. "I know I’ve made mistakes," she stated in defense. "I should not have participated in gambling. But I don’t think my actions constituted the crime of running a casino."
Gambling is illegal in mainland China, though permitted in the territory of Macau. Guo was on Macau last year when she was filmed saying that she loves to gamble.
