The Supreme Court has approved a governmental request to increase the punishment against a grandfather who raped his 5-year-old granddaughter.

The grandfather's punishment has been increased from seven and a half to nine years in prison. The presiding justice acknowledged that the initial punishment should have been greater, "given the nature of the crimes for which the defendant was convicted, particularly carrying out sexual crimes against minors who were placed in his trust."

The defendant was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual abuse against a minor, making threats, and obstruction of justice.
