Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina has resigned in the face of a large-scale investigation into corruption and fraud. He is the first Guatemalan president to ever resign.

This past week has been tumultuous for Molina. He was stripped of his legal immunity, abandoned by his Cabinet members, and today (Friday) will begin his own trial.

Prosecutors claim that Molina took part in a project to force importers to pay bribes in order to avoid fees.

Congress has sworn in former Vice President Alejandro Maldonado to complete Molina's term.
