Iceland has announced that it may accept additional Syrian refugees after more than four percent of the country's population joined a Facebook page urging the government to do so.
The country had intended to take in 50 refugees by the end of next year. Today (Wednesday) Foreign Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson told public broadcasting channel RUV that "I think we can add [to the number] but I can't and don't want to name a figure."
The total population in Iceland is only 330,000. Some of those who joined the Facebook appeal said they would welcome refugees into their homes, while others offered material goods or their time to help out.
