Egypt has responded to foreign criticism of its new anti-terror law, which skeptics warn could be used to hurt human rights and silence the press.

The foreign ministry called such criticisms a form of interference. It released a statement declaring that "Egypt never commented on laws passed by other countries to counter terrorism, and which were viewed by many citizens of those countries as a restriction on freedoms."

The law, which was passed earlier this week, expands the definition of terrorism and enforces strict punishments. It also would fine media outlets for reporting information that disagrees with official government statements.
