Hamid Gul, former head of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, has died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 78.
Gul was in charge of Pakistan's intelligence service from 1987 to 1989. During that time, he helped the United States and Saudi Arabia give weapons and money to the Afghan Mujahideen in order to fight against the Soviet invasion. He later supported Islamic militants, particularly Osama bin Laden, in their fight against the US.
