Swedish prosecutors say that they will have to close part of their investigation against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange due to the statute of limitations, BBC reports.

Assange has been accused of sexual assault and rape, though he claims that the accusations are false and intended to smear his reputation. He has been hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 in order to avoid being extradited to Sweden.

According to Swedish law, someone cannot be charged without a crime unless they are interviewed by the police. Police must interview Assange by tomorrow (Thursday) in order to charge him with sexual molestation and unlawful coercion. If they are unable to do so, the statute of limitations on the two charges will expire on August 18.

The charge of rape carries a longer statute of limitations, which will not expire until 2020.
