The Turkish military has announced that it arrested more than 500 people who were trying to cross the border with Syria over the weekend.

Most of the people arrested were refugees escaping violence. More than 20 tried to turn around and return to Syria after they saw how Turkish authorities were receiving them.

Turkey frequently mistreats fleeing refugees and portrays them as threats, yet receives little condemnation from the international community. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch both released reports criticizing Ankara for its actions in 2014, but have been largely quiet since then, despite Turkey continuing its policies.
