An American citizen was killed in Syria, State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said on Wednesday.
Rathke identified the American as Keith Broomfield, 36, but declined to provide additional details.
Reports suggest Broomfield had traveled to Syria to fight with Kurdish forces against the Islamic State terror group and was killed in the Kobani area.
