Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on Sunday that it may take as much as three years to rebuild the army, as Iraq continues to battle the Islamic State, a situation which is posing the biggest threat to Iraq since Saddam Hussein’s fall in 2003, reports Reuters.

The army’s deterioration has been attributed to corruption, having received billions of dollars in US support during their occupation of Iraq but having failed to stabilize the country, even though Iraq is considered a major OPEC oil producer.
