Acid attacks on women in the Iranian city of Isfahan (about 450 km from Tehran) has prompted rumors that the victims were not random, but targeted for not being veiled as deemed appropriate, reports the Jordan Times, citing AFP. The spate of violence was reflected on social networks where it was stated that up to 13 of these acid attacks had been made on female drivers who were “badly veiled”, accompanied by warnings against leaving their car windows open.
The police have declined to comment on motive, but there is an ongoing investigation into the matter, according to a quote the IRNA news agency attributed to General Hossein Ashtari.
Incidents such as these have increased in recent years in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan with the perpetrators saying they are punishing these women for “sullying their family honor” through the commission of “indecent behavior”.
