A rally at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate - under the banner "Stand Up: Jew Hatred - Never Again!" – was taking place at the same time the World Jewish Congress (WJC) was meeting in the German capital.

The anti anti-Semitism protest comes 75 years since the beginning of World War II, in which six million Jews were murdered by Nazi Germany.

Chancellor Angela Merkel opened her remarks by saying that the 100,000 Jews living in Germany were a "national treasure". However, because of the sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks, she also added that there was "not a single Jewish institution" in the country that did not now require police protection in the current climate, and it was "every German's duty" to take a stand.
