Norway: Ban on Circumcision Never on the Agenda

Foreign Minister Børge Brende of Norway told the Center of European Rabbis and the Union of Jewish Associations in the European Union, Thursday, that his government has never considered and will never consider putting a ban on ritual circumcision (brit milah in Hebrew). In a meeting Rabbi Menahem Margolin who heads the Union of Jewish Associations, Norway's ambassador to Belgium promised that the government was formulating a proposal for the Norwegian parliament to regulate circumcision to protect freedom of religion as well as the health of the eight-day-old boys who are the usual candidates.

Rabbi Margolin had appealed to Foreign Minister Brende and Norway's health minister to intervene following a call by a Norwegian rights representative for a ban on circumcision. A month ago, the health minister informed the European Union that the Norwegian government was advancing restrictions on circumcsion in response to the call.
