The annual Piyut Festival is celebrating the Sephardic Jewish liturgy this week in Jerusalem. It began Sunday and will end Wednesday evening with a free concert at Jerusalem's Safra Square. A piyut is a Jewish liturgical poem, many of which were written by the Jewish community of Spain hundreds of years ago.
Concerts are taking place at Jerusalem's Beit Avi Chai center which is sponsoring the event and other venues in the city. The finale concert will include well-known hazzan Rabbi Haim Louk, Israeli rocker singer Berry Sakharof, Rea Mochiach, Chabad jazz virtuoso Daniel Zamir and others. Sakharof and Mochiach released an album in 2009 entitled Ibn Gabirol based on the works of the 10th century Hebrew poet Solomon ibn Gabirol.
