Licenses to practice law were given out to 2,132 new attorneys, Thursday evening, in Jerusalem ceremonies attended by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and President Doron Barzilai of the Bar Association. The youngest of the new attorneys is 24 while the oldest is 75, and 54 percent of those joining the bar's nearly 52,000 members are women.
Barzilai said flooding of the market is a matter that demands attention, adding that preservation of quality in the profession demands a longer internship period and a change in the exam format to give interns the practical training tools they need. Also high on the list of priorities was lowering the membership fees and assisting the members. Noting that half the fees went to cultural and leisure programs, he proposed that those programs be paid for by those who participate in them.
