MK Eichler: My Father Fought in War of Independence

Member of Knesset Yisrael Eichler (United Torah Judaism Party) spoke out regarding the drafting of yeshiva students during a Knesset session on Wednesday. MK Eichler stated that his own father, Rabbi Menashe Eichler fought in the War of Independence in 1948 and was a member of the Lechi - Lohamei Herut Yisrael (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel), an underground militia that fought against the British Empire in pre-state Israel. MK Eichler made the comments during a discussion on a bill he submitted to end the draft. The bill is in contrast to other Members of Knesset looking to expand the draft. He added that he believes the yeshiva world is not inherently against the military or the concept of fighting for one's country but against the army's policies which he feels do not allow them to properly integrate into the military in accordance with their Torah based way of life.
