Politics.hu reports Mayor Istvan Tarlos will propose the withdrawal of a decree to name a street in Budapest after early 20th century author Cecile Tormay. The council of Budapest decided last week that a street should be named after Tormay in upmarket district 2.
Politics.hu adds the opposition Socialists and several organizations including the Hungarian Jewish federation Mazsihisz and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) protested against the decision.
According to Politics.hu, the Socialists were appalled and said that the governing Fidesz-Christian Democrat majority and radical national Jobbik wanted to pay tribute to the controversial author.
Mazsihisz asked Tarlos to withdraw the naming decree and referred to Tormay as “openly anti-Semitic”, notes Politics.hu.
The federation expressed “shock” that on the 75th anniversary of the first anti-Jewish laws, the district was celebrating such a personality. Ronald S. Lauder, the head of the WJC, also expressed his “shock”.
