Member of Knesset Reuven Rivlin (Likud-Beyteinu) told Chief of Staff Benny Gantz of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Tuesday morning, that the IDF has to give its troops tools to deal with riots and attacks by Palestinian Authority residents. During a review by Gantz of the security situation before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Commitee, the former Knesset speaker said, "The whole world and Israeli citizens are exposed to pictures in which soldiers are helpless against rioting and attacks by Palestinian rioters."
Rivlin added, "The scenes of Israeli soldiers attacked and retreating opposite rioters requires the IDF "to rethinking the guidelines given to soldiers in the field. The present situation can not continue." Responding to Gantz's claim that changing the rules of engagement would escalate violence and lead to loss of control, he said, "I'm afraid that is not conducive to creating calm but on the contrary."
