Gantz: No Change in Rules of Engagement in Yesha

Chief of Staff Benny Gantz of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, Tuesday, that there would be no changes for opening fire on threats in Judea and Samaria (Shomron). Responding to calls by Knesset members and others for a change in the rules of engagement, in light of increasing terrorism in the region, he told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, "If we loosen the reins, there will be escalation and we will lose control."

Gantz said there was a need to improve the training of soldiers serving in the area, without changing the rules. He also expressed support for Commander Nitzan Alon of the IDF's Central District, who has been criticized for his handling of demolitions in the area's Jewish communities.
