Anti-Induction Protest Grows, Gets Violent

A Thursday-evening demonstration in Jerusalem against increased hareidi national service grew from dozens to tens of thousands according to police, who say the demonstrators attacked them, set dumpsters on fire and threw rocks. The demonstration, outside the Israel Defense Forces induction center, was organized by a group calling itself "the hareidi community". It was joined by those loyal to a number of rabbis in the central hareidi stream, but most of the hareidi community stayed away because of the opposition expressed by Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman and the rebbes of the Belz and Gur hasidic movements, who are calling for quiet steps in the struggle against recruiting yeshiva students.
