Delay VAT Hike by a Day to Avoid Sabbath Desecration

Chairman Nissan Slomiansky of the Knesset Finance Committee sent a letter to Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Thursday, asking him to delay the increase in Israel's value-added sales tax (VAT) by 24 hours. The return to 18 percent is currently scheduled for midnight on the evening of May 31st, which is a Friday night, during the Jewish Sabbath. In his letter, Slomiansky noted that the change in tax demands in an immediate updating of prices, which would mean the hiring of many workers on Shabbat.
