Israel has lodged a formal protest with Germany for keeping Israel from serving on the Security Council of the United Nations, according to a Tuesday-morning story in the Yisrael Hayom daily. Israel was registered to serve in 2018, but Germany recently decided to compete for the spot, virtually ruining Israel's chances.
The Foreign Ministry says there was an agreement between the two countries that Germany would not run but the agreement was violated. Israel's ambassador in Berlin, Ya'akov Hadas-Handelsman, has complained to the German Foreign Office. The message will be given to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle when he arrives in Israel, this weekend.
