Livni: I'm Not Part of any Deal on Religious Offices

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who heads the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, said, Monday morning, that she will oppose amendments to the Chief Rabbi Law to allow specific individuals to run for chief rabbi. Such amendments have been proposed in the case of the incumbents, Rabbis Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger, as well as challenger Rabbi Ya'akov Ariel. Interviewed by Israel Defense Forces Radio, she said she was not a party to such laws.

Ahead of the Knesset House Committee appointment of committees to examine the appointment of an appropriate number of women to the Committee for the Appointment of Rabbinic Judges, Livni said she would do what she could to advance the number of women on the committee, adding that she hoped the committee's deliberations would be on the merits of the cases.
