Committee Bans 'Convenience Store' Drugs

The Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee voted unanimously, Monday, to amend the Dangerous Drug ordinance, making most of the ingredients in "convenience store drugs" illegal. The affected drugs include Celebration (Hagigat in Hebrew), Nice Guy, Happy Pills (Mabsutonim), "Incense" and "Stamps". The ban will go into effect upon its official publication.

In contrast with previous years, this year the Health Ministry provided the committee with a long list of banned substances, including their derivatives. This extensive expansion makes it possible to outlaw many families of ingredients and compounds. Member of Knesset Tamar Zandberg (Meretz) called for a change in the ordinance to make substances illegal until they are approved. In response to a question by Knesset Member Mickey Rosenthal, the ministry said it was not expected that the amendment would ban legitimate drugs.
