Ban Ki-Moon Welcomes Efforts to Renew Israel-PA Talks

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations welcomed, Thursday, what he called the positive involvement of the Arab League Monitoring Committee in efforts to renew negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Speaking with Justice Minister Tzipi Livni at U.N. headquarters in New York, Ban called on Israel to stop construction in the E1 corridor between Jerusalem and the eastern suburb of Ma'aleh Adumim, welcomed the release of former hunger-striking prisoners from the Palestinian Authority and asked that more prisoners be released. His spokesman said Livini also expressed appreciation for progress which followed the Arab League's statement of a position supporting negotiations based on the pre-Six Day War borders but allowing for exchanges of territory.
