Group: Der'i Appointment Stains and Degrades Shas

The Movement for Quality Government (MQG-Hatenu'a L'eichut Hashilton) called on leaders of the Sephardic hareidi-religous Shas party, Thursday, to oppose the apparent appointment of Knesset member Aryeh Der'i to be the sole chairman of the party after he shared the position with former chairman Eli Yishai and former housing minister Ariel Attias. The group stressed that bribery is the ultimate corruption according to the principles of democracy and in accordance values.

Referring to his conviction and prison time for corruption as interior minister, the movement said, "Member of Knesset Der'i does not deserve to lead a public movement in Israel, because the entire conviction in the first place relates to the misuse of his public status to his personal benefit and contrary to the public interest." A statement by the movement continued, "Furthermore, MK Der'i did not take responsibility for the severe acts for which he was convicted, did not express regret and did not apologize, which intensifies the severity of placing him at the head of a party."
