Education Minister Shai Piron said Thursday, that the introduction of core subjects to the hareidi-religious education are not intended to change the hareidi lifestyle. Referring to the media storm in the hareidi community regarding state funding and the teaching of core subjects, he said, "It should not be a matter of strength on the one hand. Nobody should think that the goal is to change lifestyles, to influence perceptions. But on the other hand, we must not give up on the determination that says the current situation cannot continue. We must not give up, not on economic grounds but on moral grounds."
Rabbi Piron continued, "When we talk about the modern world, core studies in the deepest sense of the word are not [detrimental] decrees, they are hope. Core studies core are not war, Heaven forbid. Core studies are not a conflict but an opportunity for our shared discourse...." He stressed the hareidi contribution to the dialogue.
