Compulsory IDF Service Stays at 3 Years

The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Knesset voted, Monday, to extend a temporary law making the length of compulsory service in the Israel Defense Forces three years.

The extension, made at the request of the government, was the 15th extension of the law since 1995, keeping the three-year term in effect until the end of July 2014. Without the extension, the length of compulsory service would be cut to 30 months. The military said its work plans would be severely harmed by the change.
