Education Minister Shai Piron is considering the school week to five days in an effort to shorten summer vacation, according to a Sunday-evening report by Channel 2 Television. Rabbi Piron is trying to protect the vacations schedule included in the latest collective bargaining agreement with the teachers.
The shortened week would end on Thursday instead of Friday. There are 37 Fridays between the end of August and the end of June. Under a program developed by the Horim 'Ovdim Leshinui (Parents Working for Change) organization, three weeks would be cut from summer vacation, the intermediate days of Pesach and Sukkot would no longer be holidays, and the Pesach and Hannukah holidays would be cut significantly.
