The Chief Rabbinate of Israel, in conjunction with environmental-protection group Yarok Achshav (Green Now), came out with a statement this week, asking people to use only ownerless wood for the traditional Lag Ba'Omer bonfires, which the rabbis asked take place on Sunday evening, to avoid desecrating Shabbat. The rabbis said wood should not be taken from construction sites and private yards except with the permission of the owners.
The rabbis said to follow fire safety rules, including those covering which materials to burn. Green Now stressed that the bonfires result in the worst air-pollution day of the year so plastic should not be burned. The Israel Electric Company warned people to make sure that their bonfires were far away from power poles and overhead lines.
