Report: Shas Won't Cooperate on Chief Rabbi Selections

Rabbi Ovadia Yoseph, the spiritual advisor of the Sephardic-hareidi Shas party, declared unequivocally, Thursday, that Shas will not cooperate with Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) in the selection of the chief rabbis of Israel, according to Friday's edition of the Yisrael Hayom daily.

The declaration rejects an initiative by religious-Zionist Chaim Druckman to support the "Amar Initiative", which would allow an incumbent to serve an additional term, in exchange for support of an amendment to the law to allow candidates over the age of 70 for the position, which would allow Rabbi Ya'akov Ariel to run. Rabbi Yoseph spoke harshly about Habayit Hayehudi, claiming they are partners to "decrees of annihilation on the hareidim".
