PM and Bennett Promoting Rabbi Ariel for Chief Rabbi

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Chairman Naftali Bennett of Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) agreed, Monday evening, to promote an amendment to legislation which would allow rabbis above the age of 70 to be candidates for Chief Rabbi of Israel, according to a Tuesday-morning report by the Yisrael Hayom daily. The agreement came during a telephone call, during which Bennett presented an initiative by Rabbi Haim Druckman, under which President Ya'akov Ariel of the Tzohar rabbinical organization would be the religious Zionist candidate for the position. An involved source said the agreement is critical, since the prime minister's backing carries a lot of weight with the factions that oppose the move.
