Report: Comptroller Probing Bank Supervision

The State Comptroller is examining the functioning of Tax Authority, the Bank of Israel's supervision of banking department and the capital markets branch at the Treasury regarding the banks' forgiveness of debts held by pyramids and groups of wealth concentration, according to a Friday report by the Yisrael Hayom" daily. The Comptroller's Office said the reports will be published soon as part of the comptroller's annual report.

The report will not directly deal with Bank Leumi's forgiveness of the debt of tycoon Nochi Dankner, which is being examined by Bank of Israel's supervision of banking department. The comptroller's office made it clear that it is concerned over the financial "haircuts" and loan arrangements made with borrowers of large amounts and over large concentrations of wealth in the economy.
