Germany: Complaint Against Metzitzah B'peh

A legal complaint has been filed in Berlin against Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, the city's emissary of the Chabad Lubavitch hasidic movement, for circumcising his son according to Jewish law as opposed to medical standards. Also named in the suit was Rabbi Teichtal's father-in-law, Rabbi Eliyahu Yochanan Gurarya, who served as the sandak (godfather).

At issue is the the practice of Metzitzah B'peh, the oral sucking of blood from the circumcision wound. Citing the Juedische Allgemeine Wochenzeitung, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported, Friday, that one of the complainants said a recently-enacted law to protect the practice of circumcision among Jews and Muslims did not legalize Metzitzah B'peh.
