Education Minister Shai Piron sent a letter to teachers this week, asking them to devote time in the coming days to discussing and studying the identity of the state of Israel through "savoring its impressive achievements with a committment to repair injustices, carry out missions and meet the challenges that face us."
Rabbi Piron also said, "The education system should be an open space, a scene for discussion, a beit midrash (place of study) where every one has the right to express opinions and ideas. The teacher must steer the debate and stress the commitment to a life of contributing and doing. 'Mission' is not a 'great' word. It is an appropriate description of the obligation imposed on all of us to realize the vision of the founders of the state."
