Israel Concerned about Breakup of UN Golan Force

Sources in Jerusalem are concerned that Austrian soldiers - who comprise the biggest component of the United Nations force in the Golan Heights - will leave soon, effectively bringing about the breakup of the force, according to a Friday report by the Ma'ariv daily. Under the scenario, Islamist opponents of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad will take over Golan border positions, including one in the Syrian sector of Mount Hermon.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday, visiting Austrian Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Michael Spindelegger, expressed his concern about arming the rebels which, he said, could harm the U.N. troops and result in his government seriously considering pulling the contingent.
