Chairwoman Shelly Yechimovich of the Labor Party said, Thursday afternoon, that she wants her party to hold elections for leadership of the party "as soon as possible". Interviewed by Israel Defense Forces Radio, she said, "I believe, in all humility, that members of the Labor Party will elect me again as head of the party."
Speaking in the wake of challenges to her leadership following the loss of Knesset seats in the last election, most recently voiced by Member of Knesset Eitan Cabel, who is challenging her for the chairmanship, the opposition leader continued, "Of course all competition is legitimate. It's very important to preserve it." She contrasted Labor's primaries approach to the appointed Knesset lists of the Yisrael Beyteinu, Yesh Atid and hareidi parties, saying, "You don't have to be afraid of competition. It's important and democratic. It's a beautiful thing."
