The Betar Zionist Youth Movement is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. A member of the group has been chosen to light one of the torches at the annual Independence Day ceremony at Mount Herzl Military cemetery next week. On Wednesday Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon met with Eliana Elbaz who has been chosen to represent Betar in the event. The 17-year-old has been a councelor in Betar for the past 3 years.
Deputy Minister Danon previously served as the head of World Betar. He stated, "It is an honor to meet Eliana."
Betar was founded in Latvia in 1923 by a group of Jewish youth who advocated Zionist and aliyah. They chose Zev Jabotinsky as their leader, convincing him to come out of retirement. Today Betar continues to teach Zionist ideals to middle school and high school age students around the world.
