Bassist Roger Waters of the rock group Pink Floyd has cancelled an April 30th speaking engagement at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York City.
The Y's Thursday announcement of the cancellation came a day after JCCWatch.org called on people to voice their opposition to the event, citing Waters' anti-Israeli activities, which include persuading artists not to perform in Israel or for groups that support Israel, boycotting Israeli artists and supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions BDS movement.
The National Council of Young Israel applauded the decision. "The National Council of Young Israel strongly supports the decision to cancel the event featuring Roger Waters," said Farley Weiss, the president of the National Council of Young Israel. "With his history of maligning Israel in the public arena, Roger Waters should not be welcomed with open arms at any venue that is associated with a Jewish group or organization. Those who urge boycotts of Israel should themselves be boycotted and not invited to speak. We are pleased with the decision to cancel Water's planned speech."
