Traditionally, Memorial Day, (Yom Hazikaron) and Independence Day (Yom Haatzmaut) are back-to-back. But a new petition is being circulated to separate the two days by at least 24 hours. One advocate of the change is Shmuel Tamir Chouraqui, who lost a cousin in battle. "Memorial Day is perhaps the hardest day of the year for tens of thousands of families around the country," he told Arutz Sheva news on Wednesday. "When the day is over, some want to just rest their heads and relax. Instead, on our way home from the cemetery, we are met with heavy traffic due to preparations for the Independence Day celebrations," he stated. Although some feel the juxtaposition of the two holidays is meaningful, thousands of families have reportedly signed the petition calling for a change.
