Member of Knesset Elazar Stern (Hatenu'ah) sent a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Sunday, complaining about the choice of model and actress Bar Refaeli - who did not do military service - for a publicity campaign on behalf of the state. The former personnel chief for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the letter should have been sent a week ago, when IDF Spokesman Yoav Mordechai voiced his objection to Refaeli starring in the campaign, explaining that he thought the matter was being addressed.
Stern said, "Refaeli and those of her ilk are blazing a path and making it look good to abandon the stretcher [a reference to a training exercise -ed.] and not pull their weight." He also said, "When we decide that the state will be represented by people who avoided service, we lower the value of service in the eyes of many, even if that was not the intention."
