The acting Head of the Shomron Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, welcomed on Friday the election of MK Yuli Edelstein as Knesset speaker, saying that Edelstein "will bring much honor and respect to the State of Israel."
Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Dagan, a close friend of Edelstein, said, "Yuli Edelstein is one of the greatest fighters for the Land of Israel in our generation. He's a fighter in his entire body and soul. Yuli Edelstein was jailed in the Soviet Union during his struggle to make aliyah to Israel and was imprisoned for three years in a labor camp in Siberia, where even nearly died from a serious injury."
Dagan said that "during the expulsion from Gush Katif and four communities in northern Samaria, Yuli could have been appointed to senior positions had he joined Sharon and his gang, but he stood firm and became one the MKs that were referred to in the media as 'rebels.'"
