Hiring Cleaning Help? Remember Their Rights

The Ministry for Industry, Trade and Labor has issued a reminder in advance of the Passover holiday that those who hire workers to clean their homes are responsible to ensure that workers are given their legal rights as employees. This is true whether the workers are foreign or Israeli. Even if they are hired through an agency, the homeowner is responsible to check that the agency is licensed, and is liable if it is not.

Among the rights employers must provide for private cleaning staff are National Insurance (Bituach Leumi) payments, pension payments, sick days, annual vacation days, and severance pay. Some benefits must be given immediately, while employers are obligated in others only in a long-term employer-employee relationship.
