Woman Sues over Amniocentesis Gone Wrong

A 30-year-old woman has sued a hospital in northern Israel for millions of shekels after nearly losing her life following an amniocentesis procedure, in which amniotic fluid is sampled to test for fetal abnormalities. As a result of the procedure the woman became severely ill, her unborn baby died, and doctors were forced to remove her uterus.

The woman alleges that the doctor who performed the procedure initially attempted to do the exam without using an ultrasound machine. After the first attempt did not work the doctor used an ultrasound, but, she accuses, failed to switch the needle, which had punctured her intestine – leading to her illness and its tragic results.
