General James Mattis, a high ranking US commander in the Middle East, said on Tuesday that current sanctions and diplomatic efforts used by the international community as a means to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons are not working, adding that past dealings with Tehran prove that the regime cannot be trusted and that they are enriching uranium and any claims of peaceful nuclear ambitions are not plausible.

Speaking to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Mattis added that Iran is using negotiations to buy time, something that many Israeli officials have noted already.

Mattis said there were still a few options remaining to convince Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions.
