Iraqi officials said Monday that at least 40 Syrian soldiers and government employees were killed as they were returning to Syria after fleeing to Iraq. 

An estimated 65 soldiers from Bashar Assad's regime fled to Iraq after a rebel onslaught on Friday and handed themselves over to authorities. 

Iraqi authorities were taking the soldiers to another border crossing when unidentified gunmen ambushed their convoy.

No group has claimed responsibility.
