The Red Cross would be unable to provide adequate aid to survivors in wake of a nuclear blast, International Committee of the Red Cross President Peter Maurer said Sunday. Maurer spoke in advance of an international conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons scheduled to take place Monday and Tuesday in Oslo.

“The sheer number of people likely to be in need of help would be enormous. The challenges involved in bringing relief to survivors in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion would be immense," Maurer said. In addition, he said, there would be “significant concerns about the safety of those providing assistance.”
