An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck Russia's Kuril Islands, early Friday morning local time. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage. The epicenter was about 2,200 kilometers/1,370 miles north of Tokyo. No tsunami warning was issued.
Russia Today reports the tremor was the second noticeable quake to hit the region this year. A 5.5 earthquake hit on January 1st. Tremors of 6.8 and 5.3 were recorded in November.
