Bill Clinton: Poverty, Not Religion, Root of Violence

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was in Nigeria Tuesday where he said that the problems in the country may be "rooted in religious differences," but are more so based in poverty.

Clinton suggested that state and federal government agencies help develop the poorer areas of Nigeria as a solution to thwarting violence, but cautioned against simply throwing money at the problem.

Nigeria, an oil-rich country that is home to more than 160 million people, is facing a growing threat from Islamic terrorists who have used guerilla style shootings and bombings in the nation's north to bring instability to the country.
