Islamic extremists in Egypt apparently took action, last week, against memorials to 20th-century Egyptian culture. The head of a statue of intellectual writer Taha Hussein - who was critical of the Qur'an - was cut off and stolen. On the heels of the 38th anniversary of her passing, a statue in memory of secular singer Umm Kulthum was covered in the tradition Muslim nikab apparel for women.
